Electric Buses for a Greener Quebec: Letenda at the Heart of the Transition

In 2025, Quebec is taking a major step toward sustainable mobility. As the Ministry of Transport confirms the upcoming delivery of new electric buses, Letenda is positioning itself as a key player in this transformation.

An Electric Fleet Still Limited

Currently, only 73 electric urban buses are operating in Quebec’s transit networks, far from the target set by the Plan for a Green Economy: reaching 55% of the total fleet by 2030, or nearly 2,200 vehicles. By comparison, the number of electric school buses registered in 2023 stands at 766.

Major Investments

To accelerate the transition, Quebec and Ottawa announced in May 2023 investments of $1.1 billion and $780 million to acquire 1,229 electric buses for public transit agencies. The first deliveries are scheduled for 2025, marking the start of a rollout that will intensify over the coming years.

Letenda: Innovation Serving Communities

During a press conference, Environment Minister Benoit Charette praised the boldness of Letenda, an electric bus manufacturer based in Longueuil. Its electric Midibus, tested by exo for 18 weeks in 2024, demonstrated remarkable reliability under various weather conditions, with a range of up to 362 km.

This compact 9-meter vehicle meets the needs of less busy routes and fits into a vision of more flexible and eco-friendly public transit. “Congratulations to Letenda for introducing a different product that clearly meets specific needs,” said the minister.

A Promising Future

Exo, which operates 242 bus routes in the Greater Montreal area, plans to integrate its first electric buses in 2025 and expects to introduce 9-meter vehicles like Letenda’s Midibus by 2028.
